14 January 2025: New OPTOMICS publication out in Human Molecular Genetics!
The latest publication from the OPTOMICS project has been published in the journal of Human Molecular Genetics. The paper, titled “Insights into the molecular underpinning of type 2 diabetes complications” is led by the OPTOMICS partner, Institute of Translational Genomics at Helmholtz Munich.
The publication investigates the biological pathways involved in four major type 2 diabetes complications that pose a significant global health challenge: diabetic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and cardiovascular complications. In their review of omics studies, the authors show the importance of integrating multi-omics techniques to understand biological pathways and mechanisms. Furthermore, they stress the importance of ancestrally diverse studies.
The work performed in this study will be used in developing the OPTOMICS Digital Twin for type 2 diabetes, which aims to improve risk prediction and provide more individualized patient healthcare. The novel approach corresponds with results from this publication, using multi-omics data (genetic, proteomic, and metabolomic information) and correlating it further with optoacoustic phenotype biomarkers.
